Big Moor

Enjoy the wide open skies and panoramic views of Big Moor. This open access area is home to wildlife such as adders, red deer, curlew, water vole and short eared owl. Enjoy the changing colours and mood of the moors on foot, bike or horse whilst you take in views of Sheffield, Chesterfield and the wider Peak District.

From the end of September to the end of November every year around 200 red deer gather on Big Moor for their annual rut. Stags bellow, parallel walk and occasionally lock antlers as they compete for the right to mate with the hinds. This incredible natural spectacle is a feast for the senses, taking place on a highly accessible area of the moors. For those looking to learn more about the UK’s largest native mammal, we run a series of events during October including the annual Red Deer Bolving Championships.

For more information about Big Moor, Roger Temple’s blog has lots of extra information as well his incredible wildlife photographs.
